As one of the oldest and the most established treks in the Himalayas (est. 1956), Har ki Dun Trek is unlettered, uncorrupted scenic beauty. The trek is open round the year except for the rainy season which makes it best trek during winters. The 7-day trek starts from Taluka (12 km from Sankri, connected by road) and stretches out for 56 km to and fro. Each trekker has to sign a few disclosures to the forest department and pay the entry fee before setting off. This whole area comes under the Jurisdiction of  Govind Pashu Vihar National Park.

Trek starts from Sankri – a small town and gateway to Govind Pashu National Park in Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand.

Har Ki Dun Trek Detailed Itinerary

Getting up early is the mantra to enjoy the trip to the mountains. We will assemble early morning by 6 am and depart by 6.30 towards sankri. The Drive goes through beautiful hill stations like Mussoorie, Purola & Netwar.

There will be 2 halts; one for lunch and other for a tea break at the appropriate time. Please note that Last ATM is Purola.

Taluka is the starting point of Har ki Dun trek. Early morning drive from Sankri to Taluka. It’s an hour drive due to the poor road conditions, so we will start between 7 to 7.30 a.m. After reaching Taluka we will take our packed lunch and start trekking for the campsite, which will take about 7 – 8 hours. The trail passes alongside the water stream through dense forests. You will also come across other water streams on the way.

The trek is not too steep; it’s flat on some areas and steep for smaller distances.

Till now the trek was on the right side of the river but after crossing the steel bridge at Osla the trek passes the left side of the valley. From Steel Bridge the route diverges, the one after crossing the bridge goes to Har Ki Dun while the other on the straight right goes to Ruinsara valley. The trek to Har Ki Dun  passes through an open valley and is steep for long intervals. 

This is Summit Day. We will start early today to reach har ki dun base, spent a few hours there, soak in the beauty, take some pictures, and get a view of Swarga Rohini peaks and Bandar Poonch range. After spending time there, We will return to the base camp before it gets dark.

Options to Reach Dehradun:

  • Railway: Dehradun boasts excellent rail connectivity, linking it to major cities like Delhi, Lucknow, Allahabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ujjain, Chennai, and Varanasi and to the rest of the country through other trains.
  • Bus: Dehradun is well connected through bus network from delhi, chandigarh, shimla & other cities.
  • Flight: Dehradun Airport is the Jolly Grant Airport, located 20 kms away from city centre.

Outside Dehradun Railway Station, Private Buses and Taxis are available towards Sankri. Other option is to get bus towards purola and from there get another bus or taxi towards Sankri.

The Har ki Dun region experiences daytime temperatures averaging around 13°C to 20°C, while nighttime temperatures drop to around 2°C.

In the winter months, the temperatures in the Har ki Dun trek area can drop significantly, with average ranges between -5°C to 5°C during the day and even colder nights.

  • The last atm before Har Ki Dun Trek is at Purola. Make sure to withdraw enough cash for contingencies and other expenses. 
  • A healthy BMI range for a high-altitude trek falls between 18.5 and 24.9. People within this BMI range have improved endurance, stamina, and overall performance on the trek.  While you can still do the trek with a higher BMI, you may listen to your body and engage in proper stamina-building exercises before the trek.  (Calculate your BMI)
  • Before you Commence for Har Ki Dun Trek: Start Jogging for at least 30 minutes daily for at least 4 weeks before commencing the trek.
  • Life is getting up an hour early and living an hour more.
  • Call your concerned and dear ones from Purola to tell them that you’re going back to the 18th Century. The signal strength of BSNL is good enough in Sankri. As you ascend the mountains, that telecom goes downhill.
  • As for people who feel nauseous on mountain roads, sniff a lemon/lime/orange peel. Citrus drives sickness away.

Cancellation Policy

In case, you are unable to travel or willing to cancel the trip, you can transfer the trip to any of your friends/known persons.  Please note that this feature is applicable only when the status of the Booking is “Paid” and there are at least 5 days remaining before the departure date (departure date minus 5). Drop an email to booking@roamingindian.com

Please note that the replacement would not be applicable to any Volvo/Train transport booked for the original participant. The same would be automatically canceled. This is simply because the seats booked in such transport mediums are not transferable.

The Refund of the amount will be processed as per deduction guidelines outlined below:

* If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 10% of the total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees or get the full amount of the RoamingIndian trek voucher, which can be used later to book another trek.

* If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 40% of the total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.

* If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of the total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees or get a RoamingIndian trek voucher of 50% of the amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dehradoon is well connected with Big cities of India by Road, Air, and Train.

By Road – It is approx 258km from Delhi and state-run Volvo and local buses are available from Kashmere gate ISBT, Delhi.

By Air – Dehradoon is connected by air to all major cities of India. Jolly Grant Airport is there 25kms south-east of the city.

By Train – No. of trains runs between Delhi and Dehradun like Dehradun Express, Mussoorie Express, Nanda Devi Express.

The trek starts from taluka which is 12 km from Sankri and easily reachable by local conveyance.

Best options to reach Sankri from Dehradun –
1) Get to Dehradun Bus Station and catch a state-run bus to either Purola or Sankri. The one for Purola leaves at 6:45 am, and to Sankri at 8 am.

2) Get a seat in a private bus just outside the Dehradun railway station, they usually start the seat bookings by 7.15 am and within 15-30 min bus leaves Dehradun.

3) Taxis are available for purola, from there get on a bus to sankri. 2 hour Journey from Purola.

4) Private Cabs are also available for Sankri and Taluka from Dehradun Railway Station

Any of the above options except private cab would set you back by Rs 300 – 400.

The minimum age limit is 10 Years accompanied by their guardian/parents. The maximum age limit is 60 years.

Yes. The place experiences snow from Feb till the beginning of April. However, you can still take winter treks to experience this magical place.

Yes. You can take the winter trek for Har Ki Dun to experience snow in winters. The trek is easy to moderate difficulty in normal weather, however during snowfall there will be an increased difficulty due to heavier trekking gear, clothing, and slippery trails. The winter trek is advisable for experienced trekkers and not for first time trekkers.

The har ki dun trek best time is definitely during summer and spring months as the weather is pleasant and you can experience the flora of the place in full swing during this time. The Summer months for the trek are April to June and for spring Treks visit during the September to November period.

The trek to Har ki dun is an easy to moderate level of difficulty and is known for being one of the most beautiful beginner level treks in the Himalayas. The trek can be undertaken without much physical training however, building up good stamina is required. It will help in walking for long hours and carrying your own backpack without getting exhausted.

For days where you are staying in a guest house, a toilet will be available. However, for campsites, a dedicated tent for toilets will be made available. A pit will be dug where you can relieve yourself and loose mud will be kept to cover it up after use.
